History of Gedung Sate Bandung from the Beginning of Standing
Sponsored Links
For Indonesians who have never visited Bandung, remember the word Gedung Sate must have read a building that deals with satay workers selling it or a building that became a warehouse for satay meat. But not as we imagine, Gedung Sate is the name for the people of Bandung for the West Java provincial government office.
Gedung Sate is unique in terms of architecture and beauty that is different compared to other buildings in the city of Bandung. In addition, Gedung Sate has a long history. Standing on July 27, 1920 this building was built in the Dutch colonial era. Although it has been more than a year, this building still stands firm and graceful. Its function as the center of government from the Dutch era to the present may be one reason why this building is in a clean condition.
Early Establishment
By the Dutch government, this building was called Gouvernements Bedrijven or GB. Posted by a team of experts from the Netherlands consisting of Ir. J. Gerber, a well-known young graduate from the Delft Nederland Faculty of Engineering, and Ir. Eh De Roo and Ir. G. Hendriks.
The direct development process was carried out by the Gemeente van Bandoeng chaired by Col. Pur. VL. The slors involved 2000 workers consisting of 150 sculptors or expert bongpay carvers of Chinese tombstones and wood carvers from Konghu or Canton. Not only that, 2000 workers also consisted of masons and coolies who were villagers around the city of Bandung at the time.
First milestone
The laying of the first stone of the Gedung Sate was carried out by Johanna Catherina Coops, the eldest daughter of the then Mayor of Bandung, B. Coops and Petronella Roelofsen, the name of Governor General Batavia J.P. Graaf van Limburg. Construction of the Customer Satay Building takes 4 years and costs around 6 million guilders. This is the basis for determining the number of objects placed by a type of skewer at the top of the building. There are many versions of the Bandung community about round objects pierced by a pole at the top of Gedung Sate. Some say that the object is satay, guava water to jasmine meant to be six.
World Praise for Gedung Sate
The architecture of Gedung Sate reaps a lot of praise from architects and renowned building experts in the world. This is because this building has a distinctive European-style touch from Ir. J. Gerber also combined with the nuances of traditional archipelago architecture. Input from the Dutch architect maestro Dr. It was Hendrik Petrus Berlage who made Gedung Sate colored by the distinctive elegance of Borobudur Temple.

Praised as the Most Beautiful Building
Ruhl in his book Bandoeng en haar Hoogvlakte1952 even said that Gedung Sate was the most beautiful building in Indonesia. When Dr. Hendrik Petrus Berlage visited the Gedung Sate in April 1923, he said himself that the building was a great architectural work that successfully combined eastern and western styles in harmony. There are many other architects from the Netherlands and Indonesia who admire the splendor of Gedung Sate.
East and West marriage
The combination of east and west in Gedung Sate is found in the style of the building themed Italian Renaissance, the windows are Spanish Moorish style and tower buildings that have a roof style of Balinese temples or pagodas from Thailand. Making the front part of Gedung Sate is also taken into account in great detail. Following the north-south axis axis, Gedung Sate is built facing the Tangkuban Perahu Mountain which is located north of this building.
In the east and west part of the Sate Building there are two large spaces that resemble their style with a ball room or a European dance hall. But now, the large room which is now called the Western Hall and East Hall serves as the place for official activities by the government.
Made into a Government Center
At first the Gedung Sate was built as the office of the Department of Traffic and Public Works. But in the following years, Gedung Sate had become the center of the Dutch East Indies government because the Dutch colonial government thought Batavia was no longer worthy of being the center of government because of its rapid development at that time.
Battle against the Allies and the Netherlands
On December 3, 1945, the Dutch who had not received the independence achieved by the Indonesian people, gathered a number of forces to seize a number of assets from the hands of Indonesia. One of the assets that was targeted at that time was Gedung Sate. Riding an allied force from Britain, the Dutch tried to launch an attack on Gedung Sate which was protected by a number of Indonesian youth.
